Slack Archiving for Compliance
Work moved into channels and DMs. Compliance obligations moved with it. Jatheon closes the gap.
Why Slack archiving matters for compliance
Regulatory expectations
A decision made in a private Slack channel carries the same recordkeeping obligation as one made over email. SEC and FINRA require firms to retain business communications for at least three years, whatever platform they happen on. FOIA and other records laws apply to Slack messages sent by government employees conducting public business, and HIPAA requires audit logs and secure handling of any exchange that touches protected health information.
Litigation and ediscovery
A Slack thread becomes a business record the moment an employee uses it for company work. Native Slack exports arrive as flat files that are slow to review and hard to defend. Jatheon has built-in legal holds and audit-ready exports and archives Slack in full evidentiary quality. Your Slack conversations are searchable and producible for audits, internal investigations, or compliance inquiries.
Corporate compliance and security
Regulators have levied billions in fines for recordkeeping failures, and enforcement is moving beyond email into chat. Beyond regulated industries, large organizations want to trace how decisions were made and manage employee misconduct risk in the channels where people actually talk. Jatheon captures Slack, but also applies risk scoring and sentiment analysis so compliance and HR see the problems while they’re still small.
What you get with Jatheon Slack archiving*
Complete Slack capture
Public channels, private channels, direct messages, and group messages, collected continuously and preserved in evidentiary-quality format with full metadata and threading intact. Use Jatheon for capture only and route Slack data to your existing archive, or keep it in Jatheon Cloud for unified search, ediscovery, and AI review.
Full edit and deletion history
Every version of an edited message is retained and viewable side by side with the original. Deleted messages are archived with a deletion indicator and exact timestamp, so a reviewer can see what was removed and when.
Unified search and ediscovery
Archive and search Slack alongside all other business channels in a single interface. Filter by content, title, author, recipients, origin, attachment, tags, and notes, then pull Slack results into a case file next to emails, audit logs, and reviewer notes for collaborative review.
AI-powered intelligence
Jatheon’s AI assistant, Liya, summarizes Slack threads and answers questions across the archive. Risk scoring flags priority items with a breakdown of why each was flagged, so supervision teams can review the most critical messages first. Sentiment analysis surfaces tone, and OCR extracts searchable text from shared images and documents.
Legal hold, retention, and audit trail
Apply legal hold and set retention periods to match your organization’s policy. Add compliance notes to individual messages for reviewer discussion. Every user and system action is logged for accountability.
Historical import on your terms
Bring existing Slack conversations into the archive when you connect the workspace, or decline the backfill and start capture from deployment day.
* Slack archiving requires an enterprise-level Slack subscription.

Laws that mandate Slack archiving for compliance
FINRA and SEC Rules
SEC Rule 17a-4 requires firms to retain business communications for “no less than 3 years,” regardless of the device or technology used to transmit the communication. Slack channels and direct messages fall squarely inside that scope, and FINRA supervision rules require firms to review those communications, not merely store them.
FOIA and Sunshine Laws
When public employees coordinate agency business in Slack, those messages can be public records subject to disclosure. Coverage is determined by the content and purpose of the communication, not by the platform or account it was sent from. A complete, searchable Slack archive is what makes a records request answerable within statutory deadlines.
HIPAA
HIPAA requires audit logs, access controls, and secure handling of any communication involving protected health information. Clinical and administrative staff routinely discuss cases in Slack. Slack archiving for compliance Jatheon gives covered entities the audit trail they need, helps catch policy violations early, and keeps Slack records alongside email and every other channel.
Corporate compliance
Organizations facing audits and internal investigations need to archive Slack conversations exactly as they retain email under FRCP. GDPR obligations around retention limits and data subject requests apply to chat data too, and both are far easier to meet when Slack sits in the same archive as everything else.
