Preserving email and other digital data such as social media posts or IM has become mandatory, especially in highly regulated industries such as healthcare, financial and legal. Purchasing an email archiving tool can take a while. You need to examine the hardware and software features carefully before finally deciding to buy.
But what happens when the appliance is finally on your premises? First and foremost, it has to be installed. The following step involves defining the journaling process, and then you can proceed to data ingestion.
What exactly is it and how does it work?
Data ingestion essentially means collecting data from previous sources (in this case mail platforms such as Exchange) and moving it to long-term storage (the appliance). It’s a process which allows you to import previously processed data into Jatheon’s archive. In other words, you need to migrate or ingest thousands, even millions of old emails to Jatheon’s appliance without any obstacles. Your email archiving tool needs to be developed in a way that ensures easy migration of high volumes of data from the legacy system into your new system. Legacy data typically consists of PST or EML files which have to be ingested into your archive in order for users to be able to access, search and retrieve them later. For a smooth ingestion process, ensure your email archiving tool is platform agnostic. The initial thing to do is to obtain the legacy data (PST or EML) and place it on a network drive so that the Jatheon appliance can mount the drive and start importing email. As data is being imported, it gets indexed, which makes it available and searchable. If necessary, we can assist during the export process and extract PSTs for specified date ranges. Another important point ‒ Jatheon’s appliance is compatible with all major platforms, which ensures a smooth and a 100% error-proof ingestion process.Your email archiving tool needs to ensure easy migration of high volumes of data. The big question – How long does it take?
Sorry to disappoint you, but there’s no definite answer to this question. The process itself is easy – you start the ingestion task and the appliance starts ingesting. In a single click, at any time. The actual ingestion time depends on various factors such as the number, size and type of attachments, as well as the number of duplicates. Good news is that your Jatheon appliance can ingest approximately 2.5 million emails in 24 hours. This speed varies depending on the rate that the files that need to be ingested are actually exported and sent for ingestion.
